Web Programming with WCF 3.5

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) excels at allowing developers to quickly and easily implement SOAP based services. However, programming the web these days means working with services that aren’t SOAP based. The Web Programming Model introduced in the .NET Framework 3.5 extends the reach of WCF to cover Web-style scenarios that include RESTful services, AJAX and JSON services, and Syndication (ATOM/RSS) feeds. This presentation will examine webHttpBinding (the new WCF binding that enables the development of these services), as well as dive into the various configuration options and coding approaches for working with web friendly services. This talk will also introduce the basic principles behind REST based architectures. Please click RSVP to send us an email that you will attend this meeting to help us estimate refreshments. Click here to add this meeting to your calendar.

Agenda

  • 6:00 PM Networking and Refreshments
  • 6:30 PM Announcements and Introductions
  • 6:45 PM Presentation - Web Programming with WCF 3.5
  • 8:15 PM Prize drawings if anything to give away
  • 8:30 PM Wrap-up

 Previous Meetings Minimize

7/8/2008
Our third meeting was held once again in ImageSmith's web development center on July 8, 2008 and we had 22 attendees.  Our meeting was sponsored by Crimson Leaf who provided us with some very tasty food (from Never Blue in Hendersonville) for our networking session.  Dave Kolb kicked things off with news and announcements.  Brian Beaudet introduced our speaker, Scott Forsyth, Director of IT for ORCSWeb and author of Professional IIS 7, who gave us a glimpse of the new developer friendly features found in IIS 7.  He touched upon such topics as deployment changes, web.config configuration changes, the new system.webServer which applies to all types of files, distributed configuration, better debugging and troubleshooting tools and new remote management tools.  Following the presentation we had a round of Q&A and the ever popular raffle.  One lucky member even won a copy of Scott's book.

6/11/2008
Our second meeting was held on June 11, 2008 and featured a presentation entitled Lean-Agile Software Development: More Coding, Less Suffering given by Guy Beaver, a Regional Director and Senior Consultant at Net Objectives.  We had 19 attendees who enjoyed the food  and atmosphere provided by our meeting sponsor EfficiencyLab.  We followed the presentation with some Q&A with Guy as well as a raffle which included some exciting items -  a few technical books, Net Objective's t-shirts, Halo 3 and a copy of MS Vista Ultimate.

5/13/2008
Our first meeting of the WNC .NET Developers Guild was held on Tuesday, May 13th and was a great success with 28 attendees. The end of meeting survey gave us good ideas about what you want to have for future presentations. The presentation was Building Next Generation Web Applications with VS2008, given by Brian Hitney who is the Microsoft Developer Evangelist for the Carolinas. Check out Brian's blog here!. Our meeting sponsor was ImageSmith Communications and the food was great!
